Doosan Heavy orders offshore turbine controls from AMSC
AMSC won a $9m order for electrical control systems for a 5.5MW offshore wind turbine from Doosan Heavy Industries in South Korea, setting the stage for the industrial giant to begin volume production under license from the US company.
“As the South Korean wind market grows and Doosan positions itself for export, we stand ready to support its anticipated production ramp with our 5.5 MW electrical control system,” AMSC chief executive Daniel McGahn said in a statement.
Massachusetts-based AMSC’s turbine design is the product of a joint development initiative it undertook with Hyundai, also in South Korea, for which Doosan acquired the rights in 2017. AMSC is the exclusive ECS supplier.
The initial ECS systems were ordered in January 2018, and AMSC expects to complete shipments under this follow-on order by no later than fiscal year 2020.
AMSC’s wind turbine ECS include the company’s proprietary PowerModule power converters, pitch and yaw converters, SCADA systems and other power electronics. They
According to GlobalData, the South Korean offshore wind market capacity is forecast to grow to approximately 6 GW by 2030. What role a 5.5MW turbine could play remains to be seen with leading global OEMs already offering 8-9MW machines and are developing larger ones.
Doosan heads a South Korean government-backed project to develop an 8MW offshore wind turbine that can serve growth at home and compete in global markets.
The four-year project, backed by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), aims to produce a model suitable for conditions off the country’s coast that range from low wind speeds to typhoons, Doosan said in June 2018.
Doosan is leading design, production and testing of the turbine but did not say were it would source the electronic control systems.
AMSC is developing an offshore wind turbine design called SeaTitan with 10MW or higher nameplate capacity to maximise “power per tower.” It has not said when the design prototype could be ready or named potential customers.
